Realizing the Benefits of Sustainable Construction on the Construction Site

Sustainable construction is the process of building that is environmentally friendly. It has a positive impact on the environment, and it helps to create a healthy living environment for people.

When we think of sustainably constructed homes, we might think of examples such as earth-sheltered homes, green roofs, passive solar design, rainwater harvesting, and natural light and ventilation.

When designing for sustainable construction, we must also consider how homes and other buildings will be constructed. Only by doing so can we maximize the benefits of sustainable construction, which include environmental, economic, and societal benefits.

In this article, we take a brief look at five of the techniques commonly employed to deliver the benefits of sustainable construction on construction sites and in the homes and buildings that we construct.

  1. Modular design and construction

Modular construction is revolutionizing how we build. Cutting building components precisely reduces waste. Doing this in a factory reduces time on-site. There is less damage to materials that would otherwise wait on-site to be used. Damage to and theft of construction materials is dramatically reduced.

With time to build reduced from months to weeks (sometimes days), the environmental impact of site work is slashed, as is the cost to build.

  1. Locally produced building materials

Using locally produced building materials decreases the environmental impact of transportation. This reduces pollution in the environment as well as costs to the construction company.

  1. Environmental site management

We use a variety of techniques to control waste management more effectively on construction sites. These include waste minimization through optimization of materials and supplies, using more efficient tools and equipment, and protecting ecological resources ─ for example, by avoiding water run-off during construction.

  1. Zero-Energy Construction

The aim of zero-energy construction is for buildings to equalize production and use of energy. Techniques to do so include:

  • Incorporating renewable energy sources, including wind and solar

  • Using materials with greater insulation coefficients

  • Upgrading air ventilation and indoor appliances

Construction by 3-D printing

Whether used in the factory or on-site, 3-D printing technology is a construction technique that promises many environmental benefits. In Denmark, homes have already been built using technology. From window moldings to entire homes, using 3-D printing will help to reduce waste, increase recycling, and improve build times, as well as reduce transportation of heavy components.

Why sustainable construction techniques must be prioritized on construction sites

Today’s construction sites are not only responsible for building structures, but also for preserving the environment and the natural resources on which we all depend.

The construction industry is one of the largest contributors to climate change, with its heavy use of fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources. In addition, it is also responsible for a large amount of air pollution and hazardous waste production.

When sustainable construction techniques are prioritized, it can make a dramatic difference in how much pollution is released into the environment. They can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to reduce carbon footprint.

When developing our urban infrastructure, don’t we have an obligation to do so in a manner that produces sustainable buildings without unnecessary environmental impact as we do so?
